Car Unloading via a Ramp in Sofia and Transfer to a Car Transporter

Cars can arrive in Sofia on one vehicle and continue their journey on another car transporter. Between the two journeys, they need to be unloaded via a compatible ramp, checked against an inventory and prepared for loading again. This operation differs from delivering a car directly to its final recipient: it requires coordination between two transport combinations, the condition of each car and the handover time.

A Logistics offers vehicle unloading via a ramp and subsequent loading onto car transporters in Sofia. The handling method is agreed in advance according to the incoming vehicle, the number of cars and whether they can move under their own power.

Unloading and transfer sequence

Before arrival, the time, configuration of the incoming transport and person handing over the cars are agreed. Once the transport vehicle is positioned, the transition to the ramp and conditions for safe unloading are checked. The cars are received according to their identification numbers and condition, moved to the agreed area and then handed over for loading onto the next car transporter.

The yard ramp provides the transition during unloading. The car transporter’s adjustable decks serve a different purpose: positioning the cars for the journey itself. Compatibility with the first transport vehicle does not automatically mean that the car can be loaded onto any subsequent combination.

When different carriers are involved, responsibility for manoeuvring, driving the cars and authorising departure must be agreed beforehand. The handling area is separated from passing vehicles and pedestrians; the incoming transport must not depart until the ramp and cars have been safely cleared.

Cost of ramp unloading and loading onto a car transporter

A quotation is prepared for the specific operation, not simply the number of cars. A passenger car that can move under its own power and a car with locked wheels require different preparation. Weight, length, ground clearance and the height of the incoming platform also matter.

  • Number and models of cars, including heavier SUVs and low-clearance vehicles.
  • Technical condition: availability of keys, functioning steering and brakes, and ability to move under their own power.
  • Type of incoming transport combination and any additional equipment that must be agreed.
  • Immediate transfer or unloading followed by temporary positioning until the car transporter arrives.
  • Agreed handling time, waiting time and any additional vehicle movements.

The quotation should distinguish local handling, any storage and onward transport. A price for unloading alone does not mean that international carriage by car transporter is included.

For an assessment of the operation, send an enquiry with the number of cars, photographs and details of the incoming transport combination.

Compatibility of the car, ramp and transport platform

Before unloading, the ramp’s load capacity and usable width, the platform height and transitions between surfaces are checked. On a low-clearance car, the front bumper may touch when entering the ramp, while a long wheelbase creates a risk at the transition between the slope and level ground. Long overhangs also require attention when leaving the ramp.

It is not enough for the engine to start: the car must be capable of controlled steering and braking. Locked wheels, damaged suspension, missing keys or inability to release the transmission must be reported beforehand. Such cases require assessment of a separate handling method; standard ramp unloading should not be assumed suitable without a check.

The equipment’s load capacity and permissible slope must be considered alongside its technical instructions and the particular car. A universally safe ramp angle cannot be determined from a photograph of the car alone.

Receiving inspection, identification and condition report

An inspection on receipt and another when handing the cars over to the transporter help establish the stage at which a difference was recorded. The ECG Visual Inspection Guidelines provide a consistent approach to identifying and recording vehicle exceptions.

  • Vehicle identification number (VIN), model and correspondence with the shipment inventory.
  • Number of keys and accessories handed over, recorded separately for each car.
  • Visible damage to bodywork, glass, wheel rims and tyres.
  • Photographs of the general condition and specific defects.
  • Date, time and identification of the people handing over and receiving the cars.

Condition is recorded before movement, insofar as access allows a safe inspection. Dirt, snow or an inaccessible surface is noted as a limitation of the inspection. At the subsequent handover, any new observations are compared with the original inventory rather than treating the car as an unrelated new receipt.

Loading onto the car transporter and preparing for departure

The loading arrangement is coordinated with the order of subsequent deliveries, the overall combination height and permissible loads. Supporting decks and connecting sections are prepared, and clearance is checked before the car crosses them. Loading takes place slowly, with nobody in the car’s path.

Suitable over-wheel straps and wheel chocks are used in accordance with the applicable instructions for the car and transporter, not by attaching restraints to arbitrary suspension components. The ECG safe loading guidelines present the sequence of these operations. Restraints are then checked, keys secured and the car locked in accordance with its transport instructions.

Time slots, temporary positioning and documents

If the incoming transport arrives before the car transporter, the location and duration of any temporary stay must be agreed. If it arrives late, the next combination may incur waiting time or miss its planned departure. The conditions and charging arrangements for such costs are specified in the order, rather than assuming unlimited waiting time.

  • Provide the number, models, dimensions and weights of the cars, together with information about their ability to move.
  • Attach photographs of the cars and incoming platform, including the unloading access.
  • Specify the preferred times for both transport legs and the onward destinations.
  • Nominate contacts for receipt and handover to the car transporter.

The order describes the handling commissioned, while the handover report records the cars and their condition. The international road consignment note (CMR) relates to the relevant international carriage and does not replace the local handover report. Customs documents depend on the cars’ origin, status and movement, not simply on their being transferred in Sofia.

Ramp handling and coordination with A Logistics

A Logistics coordinates ramp unloading and loading onto a car transporter according to the particular cars and the two transport combinations. Before they are sent to the facility, the handling method, receipt, required waiting time and onward departure are agreed. For damaged or non-running cars, the solution is confirmed following a technical assessment.

To coordinate unloading and the onward car transporter, send an enquiry with your preferred dates and vehicle specifications.
